Rant in A minor - Advertising
April 22, 2008
“Advertising signs that con,you into thinking your the one, that can do what’s never been done, that can win what’s never been won meantime life outside goes on all around you” So said Bob Dylan in 1965.
What would he think of that today? or even what does he think of that today? more on that later.
From the moment we wake up till the moment our bewildered head hits the pillow we are bombarded with a constant unrelenting barrage of sales pitches. Holidays, creams, tepid music, food, legal advice, lil lets, just for men, computer software, average movies, dispicable tv shows, politicians, God himself. It’s easy to see without looking too far not much is really sacred.
Why must I have to endure this torture when I innocently watch what little tv shows are worth watching? Why must I writhe in embarressment for half an hour before the film starts at the cinema? Go in half an our later I hear you cry. Tried that, either it is full by then or you have to sit behind a basketball player.
Talking of sports, is it just me or have motor racing drivers become the biggest whores on the planet. Every inch of them is covered in little badges advertising who gives a f**k what. And I’m not just picking on our grand prix “hero’s” Golfers, tennis players, footballers all will gladly sell their souls for a buck. Hey how’s about this? We cut out all the advertisment and sponsorship and just pay them on their ability and trophies eh? Naw didn’t think so.
Another myth, adverts are funny, witty and amusing. NO! they are created by evil satin worshipping commitees who scower the best jokes, routines and ideas our popular culture has to offer. Figure out who is gullible enough to swallow it, have a discussion, have a vote (satin gets the casting one) then go on their merry conscience free way.
Ever heard the Bill Hicks routine on celebrety advertising? Check it out. Basically how much money do these people want! Am I a bad person for quite enjoying Jacko’s burning hair incident during a coke/pepsi (both the same who cares) add. It’s not as if he needed the dough. He does now though, poetic justice? Unfortunately it’s not only jacko the list is endless. Big stars, big bank accounts, big profiles. So what is the attraction? Ego? Money? Attention? Even Bob Dylan himself succumbed almost 40 years after the opening lines of this article were written, frolicking around with scantily clad Victoria Secret models mmm wonder what his motives were? During the 80’s Bruce Springsteen was offered untold millions for the use of his “Born In The USA” (surely one of the most misunderstood songs ever, especially by American’s) for many an advertising campaign. He said “No”
Such integrity is so rare these days. Who would’nt sell their soul for those 13 pieces of silver nowdays? You?

Fantastic article, I love this!!!!!!
