Global Hand washing Day
Today is Global Hand Washing Day so find you bar of soap and help fight against disease. It is very vital that you wash your hands with soap, according to the organisers of Global Hand washing day.
A few recent surveys by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) have shown show 1 in 6 children have potentially harmful bugs on their hands. In adults, contamination increased strongly with the number of handshakes a person had done on the day.
The LSHTM team used sensors to monitor the soap usage of over 250,000 people in service station toilets, in which they displayed a variety of hygiene messages. These included ‘Water doesn’t kill germs, soap does’ and ‘Don’t be a dirty soap dodger’.
The messages produced the highest rate of soap usage for hand washing was βIs the person next to you washing with soap?β, which produced an 11% increase in soap usage from men, and 12% from the ladies. This implies that people were sensitive to the idea that others were watching them not washing their hands.
They also did some tests to establish the UK’s dirtiest city. Newcastle and Liverpool were top, with more than one person in ten carrying nasty bugs on their hands, London ranked among the cleaner cities.
