Skim coating for drywall and plaster DIY Techniques
June 5, 2009
Skim coating is a procedure to apply a very thin coat of joint mud or compound, to smooth out rough drywall or plaster surfaces on walls and ceilings.
This involves the application of one coat of mud or it can involve the use of several coats, to build up a smooth, finished surface. In addition, skim coating can be done over a small area or it can be done over an entire wall or ceiling.
What is Skim Coating Compounds?
There are two types of joint compound that can be used for skim coating, the setting type joint compound and ready–mixed joint compound.
Tips for Application
When you skim coat you should to use the plasterer’s hawk and trowel. These are fantastic set of tools. For most, the eight or ten inch broad knife and long mud pan are easier to use.
Before you start mudding, it would be a good idea to put masking tape on all trim. The wide blue masking tape works best for this. Make your lines straight, and don’t overlap onto the walls or ceiling.
