New logbook for a car, V62 form (V5C)

May 6, 2008

Logbook for a car. Here is how to apply for a new logbook for a car or similar road vehicle. You can apply for a new logbook for your vehicle if it has been stolen, lost, destroyed or you did not receive a logbook with your new car.

Firstly go to your main post office and ask for a V62 vehicles registration form or you can download the logbook form from the following link: click here for V62 form (make sure you have acrobat reader). DVLA also can send you the form by mail but that takes a few days – if you can wait ring them on: 0870 240 0010.

Next – The form should only be completed in the name of the person keeping the vehicle. The cost of the new form will be £25. Sometimes you maybe exempt to the fee if the previous keeper failed to notify DVLA of any changes or the evhicle has been categorised as “Cat C” salvage by the insurance company and they have destroyed the registration certificate.

It normally takes up to 2 or 4 weeks to receive the registration certificate – HINT “If you have a DVLA office close by, go in person it will speed up the process”

You can send in the V62 form (for a V5C registration certificate) to DVLA, Swansea SA99 1DD.

Hope the following information helped, if you have any comments or questions just leave a message below.

“DVLA aims to deliver a registration certificate to you within a few days if you apply by phone or four weeks if you applied by post. Allow at least six weeks for your registration certificate to arrive before contacting DVLA if you applied by post”.

Clearly it’s much quicker to phone (0870 240 0010) than to post.

I brought a car 7 weeks ago without a log book, can i tax my car without a log book

  12. Martin on March 8th, 2009 10:23 pm

Hi Tracy. No – You can’t. You need to wait for log book, because without logbook you can’t get tax, and w/o tax you can’t drive. You also need to have your car SORN. All this info is on DVLA website.

  13. tracy on March 10th, 2009 12:39 pm

I just wanted some advise I have bought a car that is Cat C repaired – I need to apply for my log book does it matter that my VIC test certificate is in someone elses name?
Would this cause a problem for me getting my logbook?

  18. admin on June 10th, 2009 10:01 am

Hi should be ok, the VIC test is for the vehicle and does nto need to be in your name….I would recommend you take all documents to your closest dvla office and order your logbook….my car is cat c too and the vic test certificat was not in my name…hope this helps

He is at the moment in Prison and has not informed DVLA that is car is off the road for the second year. The first year Dvla was notified, now he is in prison they do not know his where abouts. Would he need to let them know? whom should he wright too?
Will he have to pay to apply for his log book?

  23. graham on June 25th, 2009 10:06 am

hi you have all the documents to receive a logbook? maybe you should go see your dvla office and they could issue a new logbook straight away which you would recieve by post in a week or so..there will be a cost..

get back to us and let me know what happened…thanks

  24. louise on June 27th, 2009 9:21 am

i swapped my car and exchanged paperwork, but the car i was recieving didnt have a log book, he said he would get it sorted for me. i got a receipt so to prove the car is mine now, i have the mot cert, and his old insurance cert and the renewal letter for taxing it.but no log book. what do i do to get a log book

  25. admin on June 27th, 2009 7:42 pm

hi louise..just get yourself insured under the car and take your mot certificate and insurance to your dvla office to claim for a new logbook..that should allow you to drive the car while your new logbook arrives.

  26. tina walker on July 4th, 2009 7:49 pm

my son was given a car as a gift for helping someone with some work, however he was not given the log book, how can he get the log book and does he need something signed by the previous owner

  27. Marin on July 24th, 2009 11:58 am

I have a similar problem to Louise. Desperately need the new car, am ready to exchange documents (and have insurance etc. ready to go), but have been told to wait for Logbook in the post. Was told that no log book=no road tax=no driving! So not sure i understand your answer to Louise
    Appreciate any help thanks

  28. admin on July 25th, 2009 12:29 am

Hi Marin..if you have everything and only log book missing you need to make sure you have ordered the logbook, if it is on its way to you, i am sure you can drive the car until it arrives as everything is computerised these days ie if you get stopped by the police it will show your logbook is on its way.

  36. tobias on November 23rd, 2009 7:36 pm

I’ve had my car now for nearly 7 weeks and still havent received my new log book. The garage i bought it from say they have sent it etc, but DVLA today said that they haven’t received anything.

All they told me was to fill in the V62 form for a new logbook, but that means the garage could again drag their feet over it (the perception i got from them was that they really dont care) to confirm that the sale took place and so could be waiting for another 4 weeks now.

God im so stressed from it all.!.

  37. Koyes on January 7th, 2010 12:24 am

I have just bought a new vehicle and need the log book asap, if i go directly to DVLA office with the slip, would i be able to pick it up there?
Or if the person i bought it from is also present with their half of the sold log book, would DVLA issue me one straight away?

  38. michael on January 15th, 2010 6:36 pm

hi i recently bought an old motorcycle without a logbook or number plate the seller said all i have to do is get a form from the post office and send the engine and frame numbers but a friend says its not that easy can you help me please, thankyou.

  39. admin on January 15th, 2010 9:13 pm

I advise you both( Michael & Koyes) to take all your documents you have with you to your local DVLA office and discuss each matter with the advisor. They will explain exactly what you need to do and require.

  42. admin on February 18th, 2010 7:59 pm

Ryan – Just pop into your local DVLA office and discuss it with one of the customer service representives and they will explain great detail what you need to do.

Bradley – Do you know which salvage yard you bought it from? If so ring them up and find out from them when they sold you the car.

  44. Emma on March 7th, 2010 7:37 pm

I got a new car a couple days ago without a log book or any tax on the vehicle. I was told by the last driver to send the new keepers form off to dvla and then they can give me the logbook for £25. Since then I have noticed half of the new keepers form is missing I only have my half not their and they had filled the new keepers part in in their name. I have now tip-exed their part out to send off but is this right?
Luckily I will not need the new car until the end of the month but need to get this sorted?

  45. Paula on March 11th, 2010 2:01 pm

Hi Emma, I have the exact same problem I too bought a used car and only realised that the previous owner had also completed the new keepers bit in their name. I was told by DVLA that they had not been informed of any sale or transfer and I should return the new keepers part to enable them to send a replacement logbook, however I am unsure how I can fill the new keepers details over the top of theres as I am concerned that it will look like I have tampered with the document, any help greatfully recieved.

  46. Bobby on March 28th, 2010 11:38 am

Have bought a new car from a trader but the V5C still has the previous owners details on it and is therefore unsigned. Appreciate that the trader should have re-registered and sent the form on themselves. Can this still be submitted to the DVLA with my details added so that a new logbook can be issued? Thanks.

Hi, I’ve put a deposit down on a new car. They car was originally taken as part exchange at a garage in London. It was then brought by a garage in Essex where I have put a deposit down. However the problem starts because the garage in London never saw the original log book and can’t get in touch with the original owner as they are now out of the country! The dvla have said they can’t send out the log book until they receive the yellow part of the logbook, but it looks like this hasn’t been sent by the previous owner. Is there anyway around this, or to at least speed this process up, as I don’t want to be waiting forever for my new car!!

so she rang him today to ask when she could have the car and pay for it.he then told her that the car was registered to a disabled person previously and that he’s sent the logbook back to swansea to have it changed as its got no tax on it
1 question why couldnt my daughter have done this
2 question when it comes back (how long) will it still have the disabled persons name on the logbook as the previous(only owner) keeper and not the dealers name

The road tax runs out on the 28th this month so how would I go about re-taxing the car as I probably wont receive my log book for a number of weeks from the dvla? The car does not need an MOT as it’s only 15 months old. Thank you.

I have now ordered a new 2011 car and part-ex my old one and the vauxhall dealer kept saying it will be fine with the address don’t send off the form to change it (i have proved to them its me with ID and bank statement etc.) because it will not come back in time. If I send off the yellow slip saying i have traded the car in to them, will it matter that the logbook is my old address or not??

Due to exchange the cars next week and the dealer doesn’t seem bothered but I am!

Hi I bought a new car from a dealership 10 days ago and they don’t have the logbook as it was purchased from a finance company as a reposession. The car isnt taxed so the dealership still has the car till a new log book is issued. How long is this likely to take and is there anyway this can be speeded up?? Thank you in advance.

    Hi all,

I recently had my motorbike stolen, I went through the insurance company who now have purchased a replacement bike for me from my original dealership.. they did this last wednesday and the dealership sent off for my road tax/v5 app in the post the same day bearing in mind this is a brand new vehicle with the current registration plate (11), it is now 7 days later and the dealer is telling me that i cant have my own bike until my road tax comes through, now I have been in contact with the DVLA and they are telling me they have no details for my registration number and the dealer is telling me I am just awaiting my tax disk..

does a road tax come through before the logbook when registering a brand new plate for a brand new vehicle? my insurance company did provide a insurance cover note as i did make a theft claim.

Hi, i have been desperatley trying to get through to DVLA but having no luck i just keep getting recorded messages, i have tried ssooooo many numbers! All i want to know is if there is any way i can speed up the time it takes to get the log book up (maybe a charge) or could they fax it over to me as i have been involved in a car accident and need to provide the v5. I would be very grateful for a reply.

Rang them a month ago and they said it can take up to 6 weeks(even though it had). Tax is now ran out. Have contacted the previous owner who has sent 3 faxes to dvla to remove him from registration doc. I sent off a v62 last week. How long does it usually take or the v5 to arrive?

I bought a car in March and now I need to tax it. I have had an oversight and forgotten to send off my section of the paperwork to change registered keeper, and the seller has given me bits of the log book that I should not have. I don’t have a correct log book and I need to tax car in a weeks time. Can I get new log book in time to get new tax disc? Everything else is legal and I am the registered keeper but I have no way of taxing my car because I don’t have reminder or correct form. Can I use green section on V5 to tax it or is it too late? Do I need to wait until a replacement form comes? Help me.

trying to buy a van which only has the green slip in the current owners name. phoned up dvla and they said they can check the legitimacy of the slip using the 11 digit code on the slip. Did a basic on line check on the van(stolen, Damaged etc) and its all fine. woman on the phone said I can tax it only at a Dvla office, I assume I will need to pay £25 for the log book. The slip has been filled in with the current owners name, will I still be able to tax? The vehicle is currently subject to sorn

Just bought a bike, it has V5c and current roadtax, passed an MOT only a few days ago. Today I did an HPI check and it’s showing as a cat A from 2001.
How can the DVLA have continued issuing new V5c’s, at least 3 times since 2001
and allow MOT centers to pass it when in theory it shuld no longer exist?
Clearly someone has got some crossed wired, corrupted data, but who should
I start chasing to try and get this resolved?

Hi I bought my car on the 5.4.12 & have yet to receive the logbook. I have contacted the previous owner who has assured me he sent off all relevant documentation & that he would contact the DVLA his end to see whats happened. I have also contacted the DVLA who informed me that the car is presently not in my name but have advised me to send off a V62 form with my V5C/2. I have the V5C/2 & have printed off the V62 & will hopefully be visiting my local DVLA Monday. Do I need to make an appointment with them first or just turn up? And do they just need to see the V5C/2 or do they need to take it? I am just concerned that with the postal service appearing to be letting everybody down lately that I could loose this slip & then I am left with nothing.
    Advice would be most appreciated.

I was never sent the V5 by DVLA they have told me there is NO registered keeper for my car???? Surely odd if I have garage details & the previous owener to the garage’s details also???? The garage who we know quite well assured me they sent off all details which I believe as no probs before, so why have I been told no V5 ever issued??? I have sent in V62 special del & paid fee now told wait 4 weeks, my insurance won’t hand over cheque until V5 issued, please can someone give me info what I could do? I need to get another car to take my mum for reg hospital treatment the accident was not my fault but I’m literally paying for it please help.
