FIGHT OF THE YEAR CALLED OFF, BUT IS THIS A GIFT IN DISGUISE?

July 23, 2008

The light heavy weight showdown between Joe Calzaghe and Roy Jones Jr, which was set to take place in the internationally renowned Madison Square Garden, has been postponed. This heart breaking news for the fighters, promoters and fight fans a like comes from sources which lead us to believe the undefeated legend has postponed due to a hand injury caused in training where he cant even punch. The fight is said to be rescheduled for November. Calzaghe is said to be distraught and is desperately eager to start training again to win a fight which many believe to be his last. The Welshman’s, Won 45 (KOs 32) | Lost 0 | Drew 0 record is still intact after a decades worth of classical and unique boxing.

John Wirt chief executive of Jones Jr’s promotional company Square Ring had his to say on the matter:

“Roy is disappointed but he’s looking forward to the fight being rescheduled.

“But this may be a blessing in disguise because it gives us more time to promote the fight. We were under the gun putting everything together quickly.”

So all in all, yes the thirst to see these two fighters go head to head in combat may go unreplenished for the short term, but with extra time to hone their, skills, strategy and physical aurora, this may make for a fight for the ages, not just a Saturday night, and with both fighters gearing up in torturing fashion

Calzaghe’s expected swansong maybe his greatest victory or his lowest point of his glittering career which has gone a unmarked marvel, but with this time span could Jones Jr send his glory into the bowls of despair loss and self destruction? Only time and physical torture will tell.
