Super League Millenium Magic (3/4 May 2008)

March 17, 2008

Millenium Magic LogoRugby League returns to Cardiff in May as the city prepares to host the Super League Millenium Magic event. Six Engage Super League ties are played over the 3rd and 4th of May 2008 at the Millenium Stadium. The radical idea to transplant a whole round of fixures to the Welsh capital proved a success last year for the Rugby Football League and they will be looking to replicate this in 2008.

Millenium Magic was created due to the popularity of Cardiff and the Millenium Stadium with Rugby League followers when it played host to the Challenge Cup Final while Wembley was being rebuilt. Nearly 60,000 people attended over the two days and the RFL will hope to smash that figure this year. Many Rugby League observers believe that the Rugby Football League is keen to see a Welsh side enter Super League in the next few seasons. Bridgend-based Celtic Crusaders hope to join the top flight in 2009 when a new license system for clubs is brought into Super League.

The Saturday sees big-spending Warrington Wolves take on Huddersfield Giants. This is followed by two Yorkshire derbies. Wakefield Trinity Wildcats face newly-promoted Castleford Tigers while Bradford Bulls aim for revenge against current Super League and World Champions Leeds Rhinos in a repeat of last season’s 38-42 classic.

Day two witnesses Perpignan-based Catalans Dragons against London’s Harlequins RL. After this comes the Hull FC - Hull KR derby which is arguably the most passionate game in Rugby League. The second day climaxes with the most successful side of the modern era, St.Helens taking on their arch rivals Wigan Warriors.
