Samsung Galaxy S2 having wifi problems, need a fix

May 17, 2011

I recently upgraded to the new samsung galaxy s2, the  android phone is brilliant. The problem or issue I have is my wifi signal on the phone is terrible, the signal strength is poor compared to my old iphone ( I did a test similar range, the iphone showed full bars where the samsung galaxy s2 showing one bar).

Is anyone else having this weak signal issue, if so does anyong know how to fix it or is there a fix coming?

I have the same problem of urs and also my screen overheat if I play am hd game for just 15 min. The surface of the screen is untouchable for the heat. Anyone has the same problem?

I previously had iPhone 3GS. I am having the same poor wifi signal with my new Galaxys2. I am looking for the same fix.

  3. admin on May 18th, 2011 4:16 pm

The Samsung Galaxy S II seems to have a similar issue as the original Samsung Galaxy S. This may help – Go to wifi settings – Advanced – sleep policy, and make sure NEVER is ticked.

  4. admin on May 18th, 2011 4:17 pm

    OR

You can search for “wifi fixer” through the android market…seems to help

  5. Deam on May 21st, 2011 11:56 pm

I did not see any Advanced – sleep policy option SGS2.
    Is there any?

  6. Eirik on May 22nd, 2011 4:51 pm

Go to wifi-settings and then hit the menu button. There you’ll find an option to go to advanced settings.

I bought mine s2 few days ago. And this annoying WiFi signal problem is killing me. I cross checked the signal with my old HTC desire phone; huge difference! And I had experienced the heat problem once :o Please fix these ASAP. Otherwise, I love the s2.

I have had the Galaxy S2 for 2 days. Exactly the same wifi problem as everyone else. In fact I have to hold the phone less than 1 foot away from the router to get a full signal. It generally shows 2 bars less than my old iPhone 3GS. I spoke to Samsung who say they have not heard of this problem and told me that all phones are different? They also told me that I am the first person to complain about this problem. The phone is great but without wifi reception it becomes an expensive proposition.

  10. admin on May 26th, 2011 3:09 pm

they must have others ringing them and letting them know of this issue….they really need to get a fix for this..

  11. TK on May 28th, 2011 12:34 am

I’m having similar problems with mine. I’ve had mine about 3 weeks. The screen heats up after playing a game for a while (about 15 mins id say) but the main issue is the signal on this phone! I can never get a good internet connection when I’m NOT using WiFi…..So when I’m using the networks connection (I’m on o2) basically the pages load terribly slowly… I never had these problems with my Blackberry. Really confused. But if I’m using my home’s wifi to connect to the internet on it then I don’t have any problems at all. Strange

I am having the same problem. wifi on galaxy s2 is very weak. this phone is good but wifi problem is big let down. Please fix.

  13. admin on May 31st, 2011 3:19 pm

I have heard through the grape vine it could be something to do with your home router? Any suggestions?

  14. Avedis on June 3rd, 2011 7:21 pm

    Same problems, Realy annoing
    Smsung please fix

  15. pepitosegrilla on June 8th, 2011 1:46 pm

Same problem here with either heat and wifi.
If the wifi issue has something to do with the router, I don’t get it, my crappy palm pre does not have it. It has nothing to do
About the overheating screen… I’ve broken mine, burned, dead, kaputt… had to use warranty to get another phone. I broke it after 5 hours of heavy set up (installation of 20 +apps, setting them up, etc…) I think it had A LOT of influence the fact that I was charging battery at the same time, so I suggest to avoid making long use of the phone while it’s charging
The broken SGSII had “wifi weakness” also, but not as much as the new one :-S, it throws me out the internet even being close to the router, with all bars of signal strenght

  16. Saas on June 8th, 2011 10:38 pm

Sorry guys but i look for guys like you with phone problems. I don’t understand why everyone is always in a rush to purchase a newly introduced phone in the market. The best policy is to wait a while maybe a a month or 2 and see the reviews from others. Thats what I do. I really want this phone…but these reviews help to keep an open mind…!!

  17. Tika on June 10th, 2011 11:10 am

i didn’t have any problems with the wifi until i accidentally turned it onto airplane mode the other night in a sleepy daze. Now it has problems connecting. I’ve changed everything back to default and at work I sit no more than 4 metres away from the router and it still drops connection like a sack of potatoes.
it’s something about the phone that is one of those ‘vitally important’ features that should be dealt with.
    It’s frustrating.

  18. Adrian on June 10th, 2011 9:27 pm

I’m having the same problems with SGSII. It’s pretty annoying, makes me miss the iPhone

  19. Bazzler on June 11th, 2011 7:56 pm

I have an overhaeting problem. Twice in the last two days I have left the phone with no apps running and after a hour or so picked up the phone and it is red hot and shut its self down!! The WIFI is a bit weak sometimes but I can live with that. Not however the overheating I shall contacting my service provider tomorrow to sort. Apart from the problems it’s a great phone. But if they can’t sort it’s goodbye samsung!!

  20. lloyd on June 14th, 2011 10:05 pm

I have both the wifi and heat problems. I’m on my 2nd handset and the wifi is even worse than the 1st . I also have called samsung and they said the same to me that no one has reported any issues to which I replied thats crap cause its all over the internet that its an issue.I got my phone from phones4u , took it back on saturday just gone and the tech guy said I have to do a factory reset first to see if that fixes it – which it didnt. So they have given me a new handset and thats even worse. So I have 2 weeks now to decide if I’m going to keep it or take it back and get a htc sensation which is similar spec , trouble is I love the rest of the phone. My previous phone was the 1st galaxy s which was great and between the 2 phones I’ve also noticed the gps is alot slower on the s2 than the s – anyone else noticed this?

  21. Jack on June 15th, 2011 1:43 pm

I have the same problems with poor Wifi connection, and when I’m not using the wifi the connection is almost too slow to use! Fastest phone ever!?

  22. Dan on June 16th, 2011 11:25 am

Same problem here with the S2. Poor wifi reception and continually dropping connection, which seems to be pulling down the router’s wifi radio too. Fiddled with many router settings to no avail. Needs a fix ASAP.

  23. Elvira on June 18th, 2011 11:01 am

I’m having the same wifi poor reception signal issue. I can live with the overheating screen. Another interesting issue is preset: for instance when I turn the wifi off and try to reconnect to the same wifi; the internet can’t be accessed.

  24. Dan on June 19th, 2011 11:44 am

Just tried Android app ‘FXR Wifi fix and rescue’. Down side is that it removes all your wifi profiles but it does seem to have improved performance now I’ve re-created my home one. Still no where near as good as my old iPhone 3G.

  25. Tom on June 19th, 2011 2:40 pm

Same problem. I started this thread, where you can see the response I got from the nordic support team. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1117077

Most people on that forum, however, think people are imagining the problem.

  26. philgreedy on June 22nd, 2011 8:22 pm

SAME HERE with my GS2 … wifi shows bad signal. ALSO facebook for android and friend caster pro / 2 facebook apps are totally slow and laggy wen useing wifi… if i turn wifi off and use network data there top speed apps…. VERY STRANGE..
anyone know anything about this ? msg me philgreedy@hotmail.com thanks

  27. Edison on June 23rd, 2011 5:03 pm

I have not encountered the overheating problem that everyone is talking about but I can confirm that something is majorly wrong with the the phones wi-fi signal strength. I hope beyond hope that this is a software issues that can be fix but more likely than not this is probably a hardware antenna problem.

  28. Tore on June 23rd, 2011 7:18 pm

Just got my new Galaxy s2. The WiFi signal is horrible. Wifes iPhone4 works like a charm, but im getting -90dBm at best. Mostly its out. Im around 8 meters from the accesspoint.

Really annoying, and from what i read other places im afraid its hardware problem. No quick fix for this.

If there is..can someone please post it…..

  29. Bradford on June 25th, 2011 3:07 pm

Had my s2 a week, no over heating, when the wifi’s connected its superb, runs quick. Only problem is, even showing full signal strength, the wifi drops off after 2mins… did not do this on first use of the phone.

I have had a Galaxy S2 since Saturday. I have same problem of terrible wifi connection. I called Samsung and they said to take it back for an exchange. I did just that and Tesco were happy to exhange the phone. However, they tried a new phone and that was exactly the same. They went onto the internet and found 6 million hits in google about problems with wifi in the S2! There is obvoiusly a problem here.

bought mine 4 days ago, wifi now not coming, says scanning the connecting then disconnected, pretty gutted about this as i like the phone, but ok for 3 days then all of a sudden it stops just isnt good enough

  35. martyn567 on June 30th, 2011 10:15 pm

You chaps that are having trouble with the wifi. i have had my s2 since the start of may and its brilliant. i am on o2 broadband with an ‘n’ router i think most of them are these days anyway but i havent had one case of my phone dropping the wifi signal its super fast most of the time. As a test i tried to connect to friends router one being talk talk (this one worked) and plusnet which didnt work. The plusnet connection kept disabling. Could it be the type of router that is the problem!!? I also have had the heating problem too but i have just taken the battery out and placed it back after a few minutes then its fine.

  36. Adam on July 1st, 2011 12:28 am

Bought the phone 5 days ago, wifi worked awesome up until yesterday, now it is doing the same thing as above post (scans then connects then disconnects), I am really confused as to why it worked so great for the first 5 days, no overheating problem though

  37. Dave on July 1st, 2011 1:33 am

I had my S2 delivered last week. Continually drops the wifi in the house and even 3G is painfully slow. Google homepage takes 1 minute to open. It also cannot stay connected to open wifi sources (public hotspots) so is cactus. Samsung gave me a hard reboot code that didn’t help so am waiting on a replacement. I have a Sony PS3, Ipod Touch and Sony Bravia TV all on my wif-fi network no problems and they are a long way away from my router. The problem sounds more like a problem with phone design and manufacture than a random fault. Deliberated for a long time between S2 and Iphone and am very concerned that replacement will be no better.

  38. K on July 1st, 2011 6:46 am

I bought my s2 yesterday and I am having the same WI FI problem… never expected that…

  39. sadashiv on July 2nd, 2011 7:01 am

some applications are dumb. i am trying to import contact from my old Nokia phone and S2 can import only one contact at a time and not all the contacts. … so samsung wants us to import 1000 contacts 1000 times .. .really dumb

  40. Sam on July 2nd, 2011 3:26 pm

Just bought my s2 today. the first thing I noticed is the poor wifi range. I had the galaxy s earlier and that had good range. However s2′s range is horrible. I bought the phone with high expectation and didn’t expect any feature to be less than galaxy s.

  41. Jack on July 3rd, 2011 3:23 pm

I too have weak wifi reception. Compared to a friends phone around public wifi spots and this phone does not pick up as many access points. At home I need to be right near the router to get full strength readings. Also holding the phone normally drops the signal.

  42. Toni on July 3rd, 2011 10:09 pm

I bought the S2 yesterday and suddenly the screen froze! so I took off the battery and returned it back..But after that the S2 was dead! It didnot turn on!
Please anyone tell me if they faced the same problem!!!

  43. Mike on July 5th, 2011 6:11 am

wifi on the Galaxy drops out or fails to connect, but both my Omnia 7 and Iphone receive great signals from same router.
Samsung needs to provide a fix or get ready with refunds for a lemon.

  44. rmp on July 5th, 2011 1:31 pm

I was having the same problem with wifi. I used wifi analyser (free android app) and found that my router channel overlapped with router from next door. Moved my router to an open channel and my GS2 seems to connect fine now.

Of course, I shouldn’t have had to do this. No other phones have this problem in my house — tested on an iphone, a HTC and a palm pre. So Samsung still have some major fixing to do or I for one won’t trust them again.

However, moving to an uncluttered channel might help you in the short run.

  45. Jimbo on July 5th, 2011 7:23 pm

Its not the phone but the router in most cases.
I was having trouble with my GS2 connecting to my linksys router (wrt54gs ver.6).
It could see it, connect and then drop connection after 5 seconds.
Tried latest linksys firmware but no good no matter what.
I’ve just flashed it with dd-wrt firmware, works a treat now :) Good signal to the bottom of the garden.

  47. james on July 7th, 2011 9:16 am

Why would it be a ploblem with the router?
If all samsung galaxy s2 phones have the problem and almoast everyone has an other router.
and from everyone who has tested the wifi signal on their old phones the signal is much better. and those phones vary from all brands allso.

I think the point is the drivers from the SGSII that are weak.

  48. FixedIt on July 7th, 2011 3:18 pm

Suspected it was related to power management between the wifi router and the phone, as I’e seen it before. No settings on S2, but did upgrade the router to latest firmware and seems to have fixed it

  49. Johnny Mac on July 7th, 2011 6:08 pm

I was so pleased when I got my GS2 last Saturday and consigned myself to making the adjustment from iphone 3gs (which I was happy with), so you can imagine my disappointment to discover that I could not get a wifi signal. I have been persevering for the past week thinking it must be soething I am doing (or not). I agree with James (7th July 2011 09:16 am).
I’m now considering whether I should take it back within the 14 days for a refund or exchange to another phone.

    Johnny

I was about to move from iPhone4 to Android. This would have been the third time I had done this in three years (i get bored, then switch, then switch back!).

I’m really keen on getting into Android, but I just can’t find a decent device that’s a match for my iPhone4.
I keep reading about iPhone Killers, but where are they??

I want to change to Android – WHERE ARE MY OPTIONS??

  52. John on July 9th, 2011 10:04 am

Bought my SGS2 from Amaxon a week ago. Have tried everything to fix this to no avail. I think the SGS2 actually displays the signal strength lower than other phones. This is not the problem though. There is definitely an issue with its reception. I’m a bit hesitant to send it back in case the replacement is worse. Might have to. Does anyone have a support number or email address for Samsung?

  53. tech on July 9th, 2011 11:12 am

  54. Jason on July 9th, 2011 2:43 pm

Was enjoying playing with my new galaxy s2 but I had an issue with the likes of YouTube and Facebook not loading via WiFi despite sitting on top of the router achieving full bars. Tried all sorts un-installing etc, even total factory reset no joy thou. Swapped out my new 300mps N adsl2+ router with my old sky router (grey one) hey presto all loads and plays at break neck speed. still crap signal indication moving away from router but still blistering load speeds.

Why is it possible for my new modem to be crappier then the old stock sky one?

  55. John on July 9th, 2011 6:44 pm

@Jason For those with poor connection quality, try to connect using 802.11g only, not ‘n’. That’s what I have found.

@tech my bro also has a SE Xperia and has the same poor signal strength. It could well be an Android issue. Not sure myself.

  56. jasam on July 9th, 2011 7:36 pm

Hi guys i bought new Samsung s2 today , i created new wireless signals but i can’t get that signal in my phone , but my friends mobile got the signals excellent.is there any solution for this problem please post .

  57. MrAndy3 on July 9th, 2011 7:42 pm

My Samsung Galaxy S (i9000) also had wifi issues, the phone cache (wifi points) would fill and it wouldnt connect. You had to manually delete wifi connections from the cache (press on connection 2secs, then choose forget). The router SSID must be visible, and only click on the connection when the phone can see it (I accidently typed the router name, and the phone wasnt happy). A call to my customer support (phone carrier) told me to turn off the 3G “auto select” network and tick GSM (or WCDMA) to get the wifi working again. Also had problems when another laptop used same wireless, static ip’s (had to be auto), and had to use wireless g (not n).

Jimbo on July 5th -dd-wrt – good idea but not all routers are supported. Upgrade router firmware (from OEM) for sure. My 15yo couldnt use XBox live updates on a compatible router (after it was ok two years already) until I factory reset then loaded latest firmware from D’Link. Hope some of this might help S2 users!

SGs2 wifi sucks big time. I lost many times in Poker games when my wifi signal dropped. My iphone indicated full bars when I m around 5 metres away but SGs2 indicated 1-2 bars…sucks man

Overheating issues:- I know it is hot but I can still manage it. I tried Internet around 4 hours and noticed it

    Now waiting for iphone5

Just found a solution to the props i were having, eg. low connection speeds, constant disconnection and just general instability i dw an app called “wifi static” ,THIS APP automaticly sets up a static ip address. hey press, enjoy peoples.

  60. russ on July 15th, 2011 8:27 pm

my samsung galaxys2 will not wi fi tether and maintain a conection with computer, it will connect initially however when the next page is selected the connection drops out. does not seem to allow a 5 station wireless hotspot like they advertise…
any suggestions appreciated, i’m on my second phone, perhaps they circulate all their complaint phones around for fun!

  61. Chetan on July 16th, 2011 7:09 pm

Has anybody got a resolution for this? Or do we just wait for the next Galaxy S model to release?

  62. oliver on July 19th, 2011 2:02 pm

Hi guys, i had a problem with my Wifi. All working until one day I installed a couple of IP managment apps and then my Wifi would keep trying to obtain an ip address then time out and drop my WiFi connection. I have crawled through the web for a solution and didnt find anything for my issue. However stumbled accross a good app called FXR Wifi. Ran the program and hey presto its all working again. I can only guess that one of the apps i installed corrupted one of the network files in the OS. This progam strips away any WiFi setting you have and sets them all to blank. Try it, it worked for me!

  63. Ben on July 21st, 2011 3:44 am

Hello guys, I have a new Samsung galaxy S2 phone with the same WIFI issue. I experimented by changing my wireless N router’s radio channel and frequency setting to a fixed 2.447 Ghz and Bingo ! It worked. Now my phone can detect my home WIFI full strength and high speed. Nothing wrong with the phone at all. Please try this if it work for you. Experiment on the Radio channel and frequency that works for your phone. Remember to set the Wireless Broadcast setting to High.

Regarding the S2 WIFI connect-disconnect issues, I have just spoken with Samsung they recommended that i unplug my router at the wall then plug it back in. I’d tried factory resets etc on the router to try and resolve the issue, the above worked immediately and i now have a full signal.
    Cheers

I’ve had overheating problems too. After just 5 minutes on HD games it extremely overheats that i couldn’t touch the phone as it was too hot. I had to go to Task manager, Clear RAM and go to standby mode before it cools down. I’ve had no problems with Wi-fi though. so far so good.

  72. Gxavier on August 4th, 2011 3:59 am

Oh hey! just upgrade your firmware and every problem there is fixed!

  73. omer faruk ozer on August 4th, 2011 11:40 am

I had the same problem or thought to have. A minute ago we made a test using “wifi analyzer”. HTC Desire HD vs Galaxy S2.

We put two phones same distance away from wireless router and opened wifi analyzer.

What I have observed is although two phones receive same signal level they show differently in the notification area. For example for -60db signal level my galaxy s2 has only two bars while my friends HTC shows 3 bars.

    Interesting

  74. riven on August 4th, 2011 3:40 pm

    Hello,
i have 2 wireless systems, a wireless router and a wireless accespoint (with different ssid name), my S2 connects within seconds to the first one, but almost never seems able to connect to the second one ( only the second one has wpa2 security ) , so i guessed it was wpa that was causing the problem (both are cisco systems) , and turning off security seemed to do the trick. (wpa2 with pin code)

  75. skarn on August 4th, 2011 10:57 pm

This reminds me of my bad experience with my old Samsung I8910HD running on Symbian S60. It was crappy, with a lot of issues (that Symbian has fixed, but Samsung never released the updates to us). People wrote an online petition to Samsung to ask for a fix to be released, but it was ignored until the end, forcing me to sell the phone.
I told myself I’ll never buy a Samsung phone again, until SGS2 came out and it seems like an amazing device. Now I’m having the weak wifi connection/signal issue, both at home and on my corporate network in the office.. I have a Nokia N900 and its working fine anywhere at home (I can use x-terminal and do ping tests and it never drops a packet) but SGS2 keeps on timing out on wifi even when surfing the Google Market. Tried in the office as well, we have 5 repeaters I think, and it works with all the devices I’ve ever tried (laptop, netbook, nokia phones, iphones, ipad, you name it), but with SGS2 it keeps on disconnecting and losing the signal..
Looks like the Samsung nightmare is back.. if you still have the option to ask for a refund, I suggest you do that before its too late..

Do anyone know why NO Samsung official has responded to any of this complains? I upgraded the firmware through kies, and now I’m screwed…! My WiFi and Data Network with AT&T is out!! I called Samsung, and I was told there NO support for the device in US… Let them support all these complains!!!

  79. Junito on August 10th, 2011 3:32 am

Yes, stay far……….far……….away from Samsung. We are not talking about year old phones here, at most, most are just two weeks old. What are you going to do six months from now, when other problems start to pop up and warranty has expired?

  80. Vahid on August 11th, 2011 2:58 pm

helpppppppppp my wireless speed make me crazy :( so how some gs2 devices hasnt any problem ? related to modem brand?

  81. Bright on August 11th, 2011 6:11 pm

I bought on 03-AUG new Samsung Galaxy S2, had been struggling to understand if there is low signal problem with phone or router and now confirmed there is issue with this phone’s WiFi :(

  82. Dave on August 11th, 2011 7:16 pm

Same issue here, 1 bar wifi beside the router, not good, time to return it I think,

  83. Kiryu on August 12th, 2011 1:52 pm

Very weak WIFI reception on the galaxy S2. My friend’s Galaxy SL is so much better than mine. Only 5 meters away from router and my connection get dropped off while the Galaxy SL still having 2 bars and running smoothly. =<

  84. Paul on August 13th, 2011 1:52 am

And Samsung say this isn’t a common problem? Hmmm…
I just upgraded from my crap N97 to an S2 3 days ago, superb little phone.
EXCEPT…you guessed it…the Wifi is HORRIBLE.

I’m still in the early stages of trying to find out why and how to make it better, then stumbled upon this list of unhappy S2 users.

Time to visit the SAMSUNG FB page and relay my annoyance at a VERY big problem

  85. Rubal on August 13th, 2011 10:44 am

    hey all.

i have a simple solution to the wifi problem your all experiencing. basically with your wifi connection at home, get into the routers administrators setting followed by the wireless settings. here you will have to find the channel settings and i believe by default its usually on auto. you now need to change the channel setting toto a number between 1 – 14, depending on the router. its best to select the channel which is best for your home, if you don’t know it just try each one. changing this will not affect your laptops connection or anything connected to through wifi..

  86. Rubal on August 13th, 2011 10:54 am

    hey again,

i forgot to say this solution worked perfectly for me as now im having the super speed wifi connection in my home from any room. having said all this i do believe there is a huge underlying problem with the GS2 whether its a software or hardware fault im not sure yet. i assume Samsung will fix this fault with a update in the future, there’s me hoping it is only a software problem. bottom line the GS2 is the best phone available now it has some faults but its s whole mile better than my previous iphone 4.

  87. Henry on August 14th, 2011 8:06 am

What about after playing the music application for a few minutes, suddenly S2 just shut off as in literally. What do you think is wrong with it. Another thing, almost everyday, the other party could not hear my voice but i can hear them loud and clear. Anybody please who has any idea what is wrong with my S2? Would appreciate your assistance…

After reading to so many common problems of Weak WIFI and overheating and Weak signal whether to buy such expensive handset!

  89. bera on August 14th, 2011 5:07 pm

hey guys ,im so confused right now after reading all ur comments , after lots of search i found that SGS2 is the best phone for 2011 and i finally decided to buy it next week but now i don’t know what to buy
my second option was htc sensation but i fount that it has touch problems :S
so can anyone suggest a good phone plz :(

  90. Vahid on August 16th, 2011 2:21 pm

im sure its relate to phone bcz i dont have any problem with other devices on wifi .but i try with other modem and it hsnt problem!! so just its for not match between some modems and gs2.

  91. Jan awzal on August 16th, 2011 4:52 pm

mine is dodgy too. Gets very hot (even writing this is very uncomfortable)..gprs signal, gps connectivity AND wifi signals very poor…ive put it down next to the htc desire and the desires wifi is brilliant compared to the samsung s2.
Had to power off my phone to get a gps fix…
Looks like cheap components crammed into a slim chassis… its going back…will be buying the sensation! DONT BUY THIS MOBILE! DONT BE LURED BY ITS LOOKS!

  92. lloyd on August 17th, 2011 8:10 pm

I think its to do with the gingerbread , I have a galaxy s which is on froyo and the wifi on that is brilliant or should i say was untill i did the last firmware update with took it onto gingerbread and now the wifi is crap on that now just like my gs2 is :( . Im hoping I can get it back to froyo somehow – does anyone know how to do this? It would be interesting to see what happens if you could run froyo on the s2 to see what the wifi is like then.

  93. Levi on August 18th, 2011 9:00 am

I bought the SGS2 about one month ago.
Works great. I have used numerous Wi-Fi hotspots and it works great with WiFi and 3G.
It heats up when playing games for an extended period of time, but nothing near hot.

Also, I am using this rom:
    http://www.villainrom.co.uk/forum/content.php/314-ROM-VillainROM-2.1-for-Samsung-Galaxy-S-II-(2.3.4-time)

I recommend it to anyone sporting a SGS2.

  94. Alessandro on August 21st, 2011 1:49 pm

    Dear ALL,

I used to have an Galaxy S bought it last year and 3 months after continuous debate with my mobile provider , decided to give it away to a friend who did not use internet.

I had the same problem and all my friend with he same handset had the same issue with the Wi-FI and mostly switching from this to 3G ( I had to switch off and on the phone to pass from wi -fi to 3g). Samsung always told me I was the only person encountering these issues. For this reason I am no longer buying a Samsung phone.

  95. jan on August 22nd, 2011 11:53 pm

Exactly. Wifi on sg2 is extremely bad. I compared other cells such as bb, iPhone they both never struggle t connect t the router, work within much greater distance. I tried fxr wifi plus other things never helped. Sometimes wen I lose wifi eventho it still shows I’m connected to internet, bars r changing up to 3 bars it just gets stuck n I need to walk straight t the router n leave the cell next t it for a minute. Its a crap phone never again. Switching on off wifi does not help. Just need to who’ve this bloody thing straight to the router.

  96. Ravi Kulkarni on August 23rd, 2011 6:12 am

Has anyone had problems when making a call…….my screen goes blank and I cannot disconnect, I have to shake the phone to get the screen back…….and I have problem in connecting WIFI, earlier i have Iphone which was very fast in connecting
    can any one help me

  97. Jafa on August 23rd, 2011 3:30 pm

Unfortunatelly, my wifi is also down… after couple of weeks something has brokedown.. or I did not put so much attantion to it at the beginning… hope to have it fixed with new upgrade (2.3.4)

  98. Dave on August 30th, 2011 11:44 pm

Hi same wifi issues here, press the side button on your sg2 and turn off data network mode this turns off 3g which doubles your battery life.

  99. Rowan on September 1st, 2011 7:12 pm

My S2 has poor phone performance when at home. I can hear a caller, but they can’t hear me. Also sometimes it does not ring and later I find a missed call message. WiFi is weak and GPS won’t hold a fix when travelling fast, ie. in aircraft. My old Nokia N95 didn’t have that problem. Otherwise it is great!

  100. Mattias on September 1st, 2011 8:08 pm

I love my SGS2 but i have the same WiFi problem as all you guys… very slow…. atleast compared to the iPhone 3, 3GS and 4…
    Samsung, PLEASE FIX THIS!

  101. Thalie on September 3rd, 2011 12:51 am

Last week I bought a SGS2 and signed a new contract with Virgin Mobile, which is owned by Bell. No problem with that unit. After a few days, I returned the Virgin phone, and bought a Bell phone because Bell offered me a better plan. Nightmare started! The first Bell SGS2 was a true lemon: it would not connect to the internet on the wireless network, battery wouldn’t charge, the FM radio couldnot be turned on even though the earphone had been plugged in. Thanks to a similar forum to this one, I found a “fix” to the FM earphone issue. Someone posted that he had to pull the earphone a teeny bit out of the jack, wiggled it somewhat. I did the same, it worked for me, but I returned it. Got this current unit, it has wifi connection problems: intermittent connection, drop connection, etc. When it’s connected, it can be fast at the beginning (after a shut down, a factory reset, a battery out/in), then it slows down then kaput! Just used it to make a call, drops call like flies!

  102. San on September 3rd, 2011 6:26 pm

Guys let me tell u my one month old s2 already has got its motherboard changed . The problem of low wifi strength and abrupt boiling on wifi usage is still persistent.
The phone would drain out abruptly just in pocket whenever it feels like.Crappppppppp

  103. E Brown on September 4th, 2011 9:47 pm

i have just bought a samsung galaxy s2 and ………1)nightmare setting it up for my emails eventually it works but it keeps deleting my emails from the inbox and 2) I cannnot get my phonebook to transfer to my car which is bluetoothed. I didnt have any bother with either with my old samsung jet………….i think now i will take it back and get the HTC sensation, because frankly i have spent the whole weekend trying to find a person to give me a solution to these problems and that is a nightmare.

  104. Grant on September 11th, 2011 7:42 pm

  105. Galford on September 13th, 2011 1:21 am

    Hi there,
Have noticed that phone gets warm on intensive 3d games, but my problem is that my S2 keeps automatically connecting to open wireless networks, unless a preferred network is present. But I don’t want it to! How do I make it stop without resorting tp turning off wifi every time?

    Thanks in advance!

    Hi

I have just upgraded to the S2 .. same WIFI problems here , I’m 1 day into my new upgrade so may end up sending it back and wait for the IPhone 5

  109. Dave on September 16th, 2011 4:01 pm

I have had my Samsung Galaxy S2 for one day. The ‘In Flight’ mode being on means no texts are recieved or sent until the ‘one touch In Flight’ mode is switched off – annoying. I have also been cut off mid phonecall with the circle prohibitory line sign coming up. A great phone, so why have they not sorted it out since May. Mine’s going back on Monday. Shame.

I just bought my galaxy s2 a week ago and the wifi connection is completely SUCK..
i checked with the samsung staff all they said is everything fine nothing wrong but is actually not. i can’t even send an whatapp msg through my s2 using wifi? ..
in asia is nonrefundable so envious those from europe and Uk .
in fact i like this phone but the problem is the wifi connection …

  111. william on September 18th, 2011 4:49 pm

I’ve had the s2 for two days now, my first impression was pretty much like everyone else here, weak wifi signal, constanly disconected, very slow navigation, etc
but then I downloaded the wifi fixer, changed the IP to static (in advance settings)
and now the signal meter is…….
still very weak, BUT the phone works just fine, by this I mean: good navigation speed, no disconections, and I can move freely around my house without any problems

  112. Rob on September 19th, 2011 5:44 pm

Had SG2 for a couple of months now. If I play any HD games the phone really does heat up. So far having no wi-fi problems but, when on packet data not wi-fi it is seriously slow (on O2 contract). My girlfriends HTC wildfire on T-mobiile is so much faster off wi-fi than my SG2.

  113. jack on September 21st, 2011 1:10 am

I’ve just got a sensation but was gonna swap it for an s2, thinking twice after reading this. Athough could it be that only a small number of s2s have the WiFi problems? Just thinking that people without a problem would never even be on this webpage….

  114. Bubbless on September 21st, 2011 7:34 pm

  115. Johnny on September 22nd, 2011 4:18 am

I posted the same problem on the Sprint community site hoping for some answers but nothing. Called Sprint Tech Support and in the end the tech told me to take it back to the store and switch it out for another to see if it’s the handset. All the resets he tried didn’t work

I have brand new Samsung Galaxy S 4G and WIFI on it is soo poor that it does not see router for 20 ft. I have Samsung Galaxy S Fascinate 3G+ and its reception is very very good as compared to new one. It seems SAMSUNG has lost their touch and forgot to do any testing at all on WIFI. All complaints are basically going over deaf ears. Who cares people shouting and here they are competing with Apple. There is not even acknowledgement of the problem from SAMSUNG. Very pathatic. I was so impressed with Fascinate 3G+ and am so disappointed with Infuse and SII.

  118. Zainisam on September 23rd, 2011 4:50 am

    wifi is weak?
i don’t have problem with my SGS2,maybe its the wifi routers problem. Wifi and 3g network works great and faster than any other phone. I tested the speed and compared it with friend’s iphone4, ipod touch 4, satio, N8 , htc desired .and my phone beat them by 30secs to 1 minutes on page loading. (yahoo desktop version, cnn , phone arena, engadget)…seriously.

Samsung S2. Router would disconnect wifi when phone sleeps. Changed to “never” under advanced wifi setting. Problem still occurred. Set a manual ip. solved, fixed, all good. Only other problem is poor battery performance, daily charge required with moderate use. However I still rate this phone and have brought my wife one.

Received my Samsung Galaxy S2 last week. The WLAN is weak. It has no WLAN reception where my iPhone 4 has 2 bars and works well. I updated it to the most recent KH3 firmware, but that did not help neither. I contacted Samsung support, but they were not able to help neither. Finally I decided to return the phone…

  124. Dehaviland on September 26th, 2011 11:41 am

I had a dodgy wifi connection with my S2 for a long while, and was just putting up with it in grumbling silence.
Turns out it was a problem with the security on the router.
    Strange strange strange problem……
    Range good though.
Also noticing that the unit is overheating less and less as people manage to optimise applications for the next generation of phones. :)

  125. Mohammed on September 26th, 2011 10:09 pm

I have a bad habit of doing lots of research before I get any tech. Nothing worse than having something which is defuncked in 6 months.

I got an HTC desire as soon as it came out. A dream machine – literally. And without doubt an iPhone killer.

At this upgrade, I decided to check out the S2. Poor wifi, awesome screen, very good for playing games (although a little buggy / crashy / didnt play all games). I absolutely hated lack of integration of calendar and Google Maps / Navigation. HTC / sense allowed us to click on the address for an appointment and immediately gives direction. Also allowed phone calls from phone numbers on websites – S2 didnt do that.

I swapped it for the Sensation but it was very bulky in comparison, looked a little dated and the screen not as nice. So I made the rare mistake of style over substance.

I went back to an S2 and the WiFi issues are driving me BLOODY INSANE.

Have to reset the phone all the time to get a connection. It almost seems to “time out” if you don’t use the phone. I don’t have this problem with HTC Desire, my wife has the Desire HD – wifi perfect. Interestingly though, at my parents house the wifi doesnt disconnect, only at home using the stock talktalk huawei router.

S2 also completely terrible at connecting with GPS. Can take 10 minutes or more. Sometimes Google Maps locates accurate only to 1500 metres. Utterly pointless if you are lost – nearest 1.5km is no good is it?!

It sounds like a crap radio stack to me. Could be repaired through a fix unless hardware problem in which case Vodafone / Samsung may well keep denying any problems due to sheer cost or repair. Corporate shisters – listen to the consumers or ignore us at your own risk. We make and break you.

    So:

    1. no integration between Samsung Calendar – Google Maps
    2. poor speed of connection to GPS
    3. poor accuracy on Google Maps
    4. poor connection to WiFi (with some routers only) – only repaired by re-starting handset.

Any answers? None so far. Vodafone and Samsung both poor so far.

Hi all i got my phone 4 days ago, no problems so far. with regards to the wifi issue this is something i experienced when i bought an android tablet, not a samsung one. the cure to get that to connect was to change the security settings of the router from wpa to wep. i am guessing thats the reason im not having problems with my phone, but who knows. Its a shame there are so many negative comments about this phone, was gonna get one for my better half but having second thoughts now

  130. Rida on September 30th, 2011 8:32 am

Just to confirm what others are seeing, just bought S2, wifi problems, same location with my other HD2, the HD2 has no issues with signal strength or connection to two home networks, the S2 always week, dropping connection, and if it sees one network, usually the second is too week to connect to.

sitting 3 ft from routers does not help getting full signal.

I think it is related to S2 not routers (also have ipad, notebooks and pc with wifi, none has issue, had before the two tytans, two omnias, sony, iphone 3Gs none had this problem, same set up at home the whole time).

maybe the antenna is not having enough battery juice,

it would be nice to have a market app to add juice to the antenna to strengthen its reception.

    Cheers

    regards,

I bought my SGS2 2 days ago. Fall in love with the phone, madly in love. Until I started surfing. Wifi very weak and keep disconnecting. I don’t have this problem with my Samsung Tab. I am not parting with my S2. Anybody has found solution for this?

  134. Steve on October 7th, 2011 5:41 am

FYI, I got the AT&T version of the SGS2 yesterday and before activating it I tried the WiFi and was extremely disappointed. Same story as everyone else. Good strength on iPhone and laptops, but barely there on SGS2. Was so disappointed I went to AT&T store (wouldn’t touch it) and then Amazon (where I got it) to complain. They did agree to replace it, but now I’m thinking it won’t matter if everyone else has the same issue.

  135. Keizar60 on October 7th, 2011 2:55 pm

Having the same issue with the wifi. Worked great for the first few days and drops like a MF. What a big dissapointment on a great phone. Samsung must take heed and fix problem asap otherwise not worth the bother and switch to iphone.

  136. Louis Rossmann on October 8th, 2011 7:33 am

What carrier’s SGS2 is doing this?

I had a galaxy S 4G. I got a sensation because my SGS was in awful condition. I noticed after upgrading to the sensation my wifi calls would drop at very short range. It was awful when it came to the wifi antenna.

I went back to my SGS 4G in awful condition after repairing its screen, and the wifi works decently again. However, it wasn’t as good at catching wifi as my HTC incredible.

I am curious if there are any new android phones out there with antennas & radios worth a crap.

If I wait to get the SGS 2 on T-Mobile, is it likely to have the same problem?

  137. Piotr on October 8th, 2011 9:20 am

I am French user and I bought the SG2 two days ago. I had to decide bet the new Iphone and SG2 and because of the weak wifi, I am very disapointed with my choice.
They say there is no pb but seeing the thousands and thousands complains on internet, there is obviously one !!!

If Samsoung want to compete with the Iphone they have to fixe it otherwise, I know that I will change my phone. I don’ t know about you but I want a working device, not only a nice one ! (because I like my sg2 !)

Do they never test their product before selling it ? An issue like this destroy the brand image they try to build…

Galaxy s2, where to start. I write messages in horizontal mode, screen keeps snapping to nowhere so I cannot see what I’m typing. Wifi very weak, pages load to around 90% then stop. Regularly. Switching the. Phone off and on seems to help for a while. Wish I’d went with apple. Sigh.

First at all, this is for communication. Wifi and Skype or else is a key. Without a good and stable connection it takes no sens !!!

i bought this SG2 phone 3 months back thinking it is the best phone. just recently i have this problem with network without wifi…damm slow..i am regretting my choice now. other smartphones seems to fare better…sigh…

I have the same problems. Even if I’m standing right next to the router, it does not show full signal strength. I bought it because reviews (in Germany) said the wifi strength was good, but now I’m a bit disappointed. First I thought it might be due to wall materials in our house, that the signal is being blocked somehow, but that’s not it. And the normal signal (network) isn’t that brilliant either.

I love my SGS the only wrong is the wifi issue. It won’t connect to hidden AP’s even if you know the name, etc. And now with Gingerbread I am able to set up the connection via VPS which I wasn’t’ able to before. the only other prob I have is that sometimes after using the 3G to connect to the web I am unable to switch to regular wifi without rebooting the device. very strange. Wish they would open up the ap so we can get in there and fix the connection script.

I love my Galaxy S2. For some reason, my 3G signal has dissapeared. It shows a G, and sometimes there are coloured arrowes going both ways. Apart from that, the phone is working great.

Anyone got any ideas on what do please?

At this moment no solutions. The Wifi is working well a time and Bug after.
I tried a lot of Firmware. A this moment, i have the Last I9100XWKJ2: on 2.3.5 -> no better issue for the wifi Bug.

My feeling is that the Wifi problem occur after a lot of switching between the Phone network and the Wifi.
By Wifi problem, the Phone give answer on Ping.
Fixing on Fix IP is working a time, but after a time, same issue: bug.

Another feeling: that’s a question ;) is it possible that the phone don’t update correctly the IP settings by switching from G3 to Wifi ??? I’ll explain my idea: it is possible that the phone don’t reset completely the DNS setting from the G3 connection. I said it.. on Wifi the phone give ping answorth on the Wifi IP, but the connection on a website, or a ping on google.fr, don’t answers.

My feeling is that when the phone switches from 3G to wifi, it receives the new wifi settings but somewhere it keeps back the dns from 3g settings (or no dns settings). Hence the answer to ping but unable to connect to a website.

    sorry for my bad English

Hi , I have same problem also. And I see that if I told with left hand the phone signal is poor, but when I told with rihgt hand the wifi signal is incresing. I think wi-fi hardware is left side of phone :) use right hand :)

Hi, I received my new S2 and the WiFi worked great, however when I put it into a leather case (the type with the plastic mounting for the phone) the WiFi stopped working all together, take it out of the case and the WiFi comes up immediately. Cheers Iain

I have the galaxy 5.0 media player which has the same wifi setup as the phones. Great little media player but rubbish wifi strength.

Can only really use it within 2 metres of my router.

    I’m gutted

Same problem here but im getting perfect wife in my house with a speedtouch 585 router but in a friends house with a linksys n router i constantly get
disconnected and sometimes nothing happens at all even though it says im connected. a brilliant phone but for the wife issue. i can only think it is a gs2 driver communication problem with a wireless n router

I found the solution at the following thread
    http://androidforums.com/samsung-galaxy-s2-international/369720-why-will-my-samsung-galaxy-s2-not-connect-home-wifi-2.html

Changing security of the router to WPA/WPA2 security with AES encryption worked for me.

Samsung wake up, fix the glitch.

Try not to hold the phone in your hand, or try to take a grab at the top of the phone. For me, holding the phone normally in hand weakens the signal significantly. I think the wifi antenna is located at the bottom of the phone. That’s why when the signal is weak, I hold the phone with two fingers at the top until connection is no longer needed i.e. the page has loaded. Annoying, but does the trick.
