Kerala Backwaters Houseboat Holiday in India
August 4, 2008
Kerala backwaters houseboat holiday in India - it’s a really peaceful and gorgeous tourism place to visit. There’s nothing to do except watch the world go by and eat tons of fabulous food that’s being prepared for you every time you turn around. The Kerala backwater houseboats typically come with two or three guys - one to cook, one to steer up front and another one to handle whatever needs to be handled.
You don’t need to plan a route, as all the houseboats pretty much do the same loop and you’ll undoubtedly pass tons of them as you, too, drift along. Many unique species of aquatic life including crabs, frogs and mudskippers, water birds such as terns, kingfishers, darters and cormorants, and animals such as otters and turtles live in and alongside the backwaters. Palm trees, pandanus shrubs, various leafy plants and bushes grow alongside the backwaters, providing a green hue to the surrounding landscape.
Check out the Taj Malabar in Kochi for a place to stay - it’s a lovely 5 star hotel, and they will also arrange a houseboat for you. Just be sure to mention you want a private one, as there are some with multiple passengers.
I’m not sure if they arrange houseboat tours, but you can also check out the Cherai Beach Resort. It’s not a 5 star, but they have great little cabins set right on the water, and an amazing Ayurvedic clinic. Although anywhere you go in Kerala will access to Ayurvedic treatments- make sure you indulge.

You haven’t mentioned about the serene greenery on the shore as you pass by, and the typical Keralan food they prepare for you at some of the toddy shops and the song of the stars if you choose to spend the night at the houseboat.
A well written article and a tribute to God’s own country! Well done!
